From the iconic Tobruk Pool in the morning to the historic Flinders Street Health Hub in the evening, the Crossfit Coastal Throwdown Saturday June 2nd proved to be an exciting, energetic day for all concerned….

Fitness Institute General Manager Philip Sherriff, helped co-ordinate the day-long event, volunteering the necessary time and experience in event management and Crossfit as well as sponsorship for the event.

Most of what happens at an event happens before it begins and days like this are impossible without the support of volunteers and sponsors. The Business Owners, family and friends of Strand Fitness, Strand Crossfit, Crossfit Tropics, XFF Fitness, Crossfit 4802 Wolf Den and Crossfit Take Charge all came together to make the day a big success!

The Fitness Institute students who volunteered their time gained some valuable insights into what goes into organising an event (from Risk management to Marketing) as well as first-hand experience with Crossfit training and competition.

The day raised $2030.00 for nominated charity, Soldier On and a cheque was presented to Deb Rowland who is also raising funds for Soldier On by swimming from Magnetic Island to Townsville on July 29th. You can donate to Deb’s fund raising here: https://soldieron.giveeasy.org/campaigns/magnetic-island-to-townsville-swim/

Raising money is one thing…raising awareness is another….

Retired General John Calligari also came to share his experiences with Soldier On and the challenges Defence Force personnel face making the transition from the structure of the ADF to civilian life. Statistics such as ex-ADF personnel are dying by suicide at 3.5 times the average for civilians of the same age are a sobering reminder of the importance of organisations like Soldier On.

All in all, the 2018 Coastal Throwdown was a rewarding day which brought out the personal best in everyone!

We’d like to thank everyone for being there and making it happen!
